Migrate from another cookie consent plugin
Two consent plugins on one site can show duplicate banners or fight over script blocking, so switch over in a deliberate order.
Before you begin
- Note the cookie categories, banner text and privacy policy URL you use today.
- Check requirements: WordPress 6.2+, PHP 7.4+, single-site install.
- Do this on a staging copy first if you can.
Steps
- Install and activate CookieRay (leave the old plugin active for now). The banner is off by default, so visitors see no change.
- In Settings → Consent Behavior, choose Log Consent Only while you set up.
- In Banner Design, recreate your text, colors, buttons and privacy policy link. Switch on Show privacy policy link and set a real Privacy Policy URL — an empty URL or a placeholder
#doesn’t count as configured on the Dashboard checklist. - Run a cookie scan and categorize cookies in Cookie Inventory.
- Optionally enable Google Consent Mode v2.
- Deactivate the old consent plugin, then immediately switch CookieRay’s Show Cookie Consent Banner on. Do both in the same maintenance window so the site is never without a banner.
- Switch Consent Behavior to Block Until Consent (Strict) when you want CookieRay to block known trackers, and test it.
- Clear page caches and any CDN cache.
- After you’ve confirmed everything works, delete the old plugin.
What to expect
- CookieRay keeps its own consent record, so returning visitors will see the banner again.
- Export any consent logs you need from the old plugin before you remove it. CookieRay’s exports cover CookieRay’s own records.
